When the mpingo seeds germinate after about 10-14 days, the shoot with its primary leaves rises out of the seedbed with the dried seedpod husk, which is then pushed off by the growing leaves. This very even spacing and clean seedbed surface allows for careful removal of the mpingo sprouts after they begin to form secondary leaves in a few more weeks. At this point time they are transplanted into inexpensive seedpots made of plastic polythene tubing filled with soil.
